Early Waiver Adds
Scoop These Guys Before Lock
By: Mike Johnson (@Mjohnson86)
The theme of this article is, “Work smarter, not harder.” Every week we will give you the top Waiver Adds in our Tuesday article. However, you can make things a lot easier and less stressful by getting ahead of things with some players and situations. Doing so in a smart way can help you save FAAB or preserve high waiver priority in your league.
Every Sunday I will give you a few players who stand out to me as great potential additions that can give you a leg up on your league mates. Look to add these players if you have players you are willing to drop, who get late-week injuries, or who are ruled out of their games and allow you to move them to an IR spot once they are officially inactive on Sunday morning.
Matthew Stafford, QB, LAR
The Rams are on bye this week but have a great matchup against the Raiders in Week 7, and Stafford may be getting star WR Cooper Kupp back as well. He has struggled a bit so far this season, but the Raiders have made guys like Andy Dalton and Bo Nix look like superstars, so if you have Dak Prescott or another QB with a week 7 bye, Stafford is the guy you want.
Ty Chandler, RB, MIN
The Vikings played the early game in London in Week 5 before heading on bye for this week. Lost in the shuffle was the fact that starting RB Aaron Jones left their game against the Jets early with a hip injury. Jones is nearly 30 years old and a hip injury is something that can linger, while the Vikings’ offense is humming and Chandler has looked terrific this season. Available in roughly 70% of leagues on Yahoo and ESPN, pick him up now – if reports come out that Jones will miss Week 7 before waivers run, then Chandler’s going to cost you.
Blame Corum, RB, LAR
Corum saw his first game action of the season in Week 5 against the Packers. Los Angeles is on bye this week and Corum isn’t a priority add right now, but looking ahead, it wouldn’t be surprising if Corum gets more involved. The deeper we get into the season, the higher the likelihood of a huge workload catching up with Kyren Williams.
Xavier Legette, WR, CAR
The Panthers were a mess the first two weeks with Bryce Young at QB. They looked great in Week 3 but Adam Thielen played most of that game. In Week 4, Legette played his first game with a full-time role and was targeted 10 times, which he turned into nearly 20 PPR points. In Week 5, he missed a large part of the game with an injury that ended up not being an issue, but it made his stats look poor. Make no mistake, this team isn’t going anywhere this year and Legette is a huge part of their future – he will be very involved going forward. Pick him up now before everyone else catches on.
Colts Defense
If you are feeling unsettled about your Week 6 defense, picking on Will Levis is never a bad idea! The Colts face the Dolphins without Tua Tagovailoa (which has been a train wreck) in Week 7, which gives you back-to-back weeks where you can feel good about your defense. The Colts haven’t been a good defense so far this year, but sometimes you don’t have to be if the other guy throws it to you.
