Early Waiver Adds
Scoop These Guys Before Lock
By: Mike Johnson (@Mjohnson86)
The theme of this article is, “Work smarter, not harder.” Every week we will give you the top Waiver Adds in our Tuesday article. However, you can make things a lot easier and less stressful by getting ahead of things with some players and situations. Doing so in a smart way can help you save FAAB or preserve high waiver priority in your league.
Every Sunday I will give you a few players who stand out to me as great potential additions that can give you a leg up on your league mates. Look to add these players if you have players you are willing to drop, who get late-week injuries, or who are ruled out of their games and allow you to move them to an IR spot once they are officially inactive on Sunday morning.
Tua Tagovailoa, QB, MIA
The Dolphins have been a mess since Tua went on injured reserve, but reports are that he will return in Week 8 for a home game against a Cardinals team traveling cross country to play an early game, on a short week after playing the Chargers on Monday night. This is about as good of a spot as you can ask for, and with his weapons…..wheels up. The best part is if your league has an IR spot, you can pick up Tua now, stash him on IR for this week, and wait to drop a player until you activate him next week. Tua is available in 74% of ESPN leagues and 55% of Yahoo leagues.
Jaylen Warren, RB, PIT
Warren has battled injuries this season and Najee Harris has fit better playing next to Justin Fields. This week, however, the Steelers are turning to Russell Wilson at quarterback, and Warren’s skill set – particularly as a pass catcher – may fit better with him, as Wilson targets RBs at a very high rate. Warren is available in roughly 60% of ESPN and Yahoo leagues.
Sean Tucker, RB, TB
Very few players in the NFL are capable of a 30-point fantasy outing and even fewer actually do it. Having a player like that post that type of game and then still be available to pick up for free the following week is something you truly never see, but that’s the story with Tucker. The Bucs’ coaches themselves have said they will “play the hot hand,” and given the struggles of Rachaad White and how Week 7 played out, it is entirely possible Tucker just runs away with this job, or at the very least, a sizable role in a very good offense. Tucker is available in over 80% of leagues on both ESPN and Yahoo.
DeMario Douglas, WR, NE
Douglas was the top receiving option for Drake Maye in his first start and is in position to continue to benefit from the change at QB. Owned in only 40% of leagues with a great matchup against the Jags this week, Douglas will be a popular Week 8 waiver add once he proves last week was not a fluke.
Chargers Defense
The Chargers’ defense is ranked No. 3 in DVOA rankings and hosts the Saints in Week 8. The Saints are currently an absolute train wreck offensively, and if Derek Carr and/or Chris Olave are out again alongside multiple injured offensive linemen, the Chargers will be hands down the top defense of the week.
