Early Waiver Adds
Scoop These Guys Before Lock
By: Mike Johnson (@Mjohnson86)
The theme of this article is, “Work smarter, not harder.” Every week we will give you the top Waiver Adds in our Tuesday article. However, you can make things a lot easier and less stressful by getting ahead of things with some players and situations. Doing so in a smart way can help you save FAAB or preserve high waiver priority in your league.
Every Sunday I will give you a few players who stand out to me as great potential additions that can give you a leg up on your league mates. Look to add these players if you have players you are willing to drop, who get late-week injuries, or who are ruled out of their games and allow you to move them to an IR spot once they are officially inactive on Sunday morning.
Derek Carr, QB, NO
Why would you pick up a QB who is about to miss his third straight game? Because he plays the Panthers next week and his coach expects him to return. Carr may not be the highest-ceiling QB around, but among the QBs that are rostered in under 50% of leagues currently, he has by far the best matchup. If for some reason he isn’t able to play in Week 9, you can just pick up a different QB that you would have been stuck with anyways. This is an especially good pickup if your league has an IR spot, as you can add Carr now, put him on IR, and still pick another player up to fill that roster spot. Carr is available in about 90% of leagues.
Braelon Allen, RB, NYJ
Allen is one of the more talented backup RBs in the league, but he has been dropped by a lot of people in recent weeks as they deal with bye weeks and see Breece Hall dominating the backfield usage. The Jets play the Texans on Thursday night, so if Hall picks up a minor injury Sunday, it is more likely to keep him out for Week 9 and Allen would become a great starting option in that scenario. If nothing like that happens with Hall and he’s looking likely to play in Week 9 from Tuesday’s practice reports, you can always drop Allen for the Wednesday waiver run and be no worse off from it. All reward, no risk. Allen is owned in less than 40% of Yahoo leagues.
Tyler Allgeier, RB, ATL
Similar to Allen, Allgeier is a highly capable backup RB in a good offense who would be a top-12 RB if his backfield mate were to miss time. If you have spots on your bench of guys who aren’t injured or bye week players that are critical pieces of your team, I like using those spots on players like this. The Falcons play the Cowboys’ porous run defense in Week 9, and if Bijan Robinson were to miss for some reason, then Allgeier would be an elite RB option for the week. Only rostered in 37% of Yahoo leagues.
DeMario Douglas, WR, NE
Douglas was on this list last week and was targeted on the first two plays of the game for the Patriots, but he then barely played due to an illness he was battling. He’s fine now and is in a matchup where the Patriots are unlikely to be able to run the ball or throw to the perimeter. He could easily see 10 targets this week and provide a lot of value going forward. Currently owned in only 32% of Yahoo leagues.
Saints Defense
Just look at the Panthers’ schedule and see who they play the following week. If that defense is available and you have room on your roster, you should probably pick them up.
